Morning Report: President Donald Trump to address the nation about the novel coronavirus Sunday night
March 8, 2020 | President Donald Trump is scheduled to address the nation about the COVID-19 crisis this evening. His address will be held from the White House at 9 p.m. EST.
The White House says the president’s address will “inform the American people about the circumstances of the outbreak, the efforts to address it, the planning for the future, and what the administration is doing to help Americans prepare for this outbreak in the months to come.”
It’s not yet clear what the president will say. The White House said it would be released after the address.
The president’s address comes on the heels of two coronavirus-related meetings in the White House.
In his Saturday briefing, Trump said the government “is prepared” to deal with the coronavirus, but that some treatments and vaccines are still months away. He said the administration has coordinated with the drug industry to speed up the distribution of treatments to Americans.
He also took a swipe at Democrats and the media, calling on Americans to be patriotic and putting themselves first.
“I would like the American people to understand what’s going on and to be thankful for their leaders. … I mean, it’s not a time to be political, it’s not a time to be partisan and it’s not a time to be attacking your neighbor,” he said. “I’ve just been speaking the other day about all of the great, great people — many of them from the press — that have been doing, really, a fantastic job.”
Trump is also scheduled to hold a news conference with the governors of New York and New Jersey on Saturday at 5 p.m.
The White House has said the president will discuss “how we are working to protect the American people and our first responders from this public health threat and to prepare for future outbreaks.”
